Top 10 Reasons Why Canadians Should Visit Myrtle Beach

Canadians Myrtle Beach
A note from Normand Nadon

As a proud Canadian and lifelong golf enthusiast, I’ve been making the journey to Myrtle Beach for over 30 years. Every time I cross the border and feel the warm South Carolina sun on my face, I know I’m home. For those of us who love golf, great food, and the ocean breeze, Myrtle Beach is more than just a vacation spot—it’s a way of life.

We Canadians know a good thing when we find it, and for me, that’s Myrtle Beach. Whether you’ve been coming here for years or you’re planning your first trip, there’s always something new to see, do, and experience at The Beach.

The Grand Strand stretches for 60 miles—about 100 kilometers for my fellow Canucks—along the stunning Atlantic coastline, with 14 unique coastal communities, each offering its own character and charm. From the lively boardwalks to the peaceful inlets, you’ll find a spot that feels just right.

What I love most about Myrtle Beach is how easy it is to settle in, unwind, and enjoy life at your own pace. Whether it’s teeing off on a championship golf course, relaxing by the ocean, or sharing unforgettable moments with friends and family, there’s something here for everyone. And while I could go on all day about why Myrtle Beach is the perfect getaway, I’ve narrowed it down to ten reasons why Canadians, in particular, should make the trip!

1. 60 Miles of Beaches

We Canadians appreciate a good beach, and Myrtle Beach has some of the best I’ve ever seen. Over 60 miles (or about 100 kilometers) of soft, sandy coastline stretch along the Grand Strand, offering plenty of room to soak up the sun, take a peaceful walk, or enjoy the sound of the waves. There’s something special about stepping onto that warm sand after months of freezing temperatures back home.

2. Golf Capital of the World

I may be biased as a former golf pro, but this is the real deal. Myrtle Beach is a golfer’s paradise, with nearly 90 courses, each offering a unique challenge and incredible scenery — not to mention over 30 mini golf courses for family fun. You’ll find layouts by legends like Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, and Jack Nicklaus, all designed to test your skills while letting you take in breathtaking marsh views, live oaks draped in Spanish moss, and stunning oceanfront greens. Whether you're a scratch golfer or just getting into the game, there’s a course here with your name on it.

3. Perfect Weather for Snowbirds

Canadian winters can be long and brutal, but Myrtle Beach offers a sunny escape. With more than 200 days of sunshine a year and mild temperatures even in the cooler months, it’s a fantastic place to shake off the winter blues. I’ve played golf in Myrtle Beach in January wearing just a light sweater—try doing that back home!

4. A Food Lover's Dream

I’m a firm believer that a great trip is made even better by good food, and Myrtle Beach delivers. With over 2,000 restaurants, you’ll find everything from fresh seafood caught daily in Murrells Inlet to classic Southern barbecue, juicy steaks, and international flavors. One of my favorite traditions? Ordering a big plate of shrimp and grits while sitting outside, feeling the ocean breeze, and toasting another great day on the Grand Strand.

5. Amazing Shopping Opportunities

Whether you’re looking for top brands at outlet prices, unique boutique finds, or something to bring home as a souvenir, Myrtle Beach has it all. Tanger Outlets is a must for bargain hunters, while The Market Common offers a more upscale, relaxed shopping experience. We love Barefoot Landing with its mix of shops and waterfront dining, shows and more — it's a must-visit spot.

6. Plenty of Outdoor Activites

Even beyond the golf courses and beaches, the Grand Strand is an outdoor playground. Kayaking along the Waccamaw River, taking a stroll through Brookgreen Gardens, or biking the trails at Huntington Beach State Park are just a few ways to enjoy the fresh air. If you love nature, you’ll find endless opportunities to get outside and explore.

7. Year-Round Events & Festivals

Myrtle Beach knows how to throw a party, and no matter when you visit, you’ll find something exciting happening. For my fellow Canadians, Can-Am Days in March is a celebration of the friendship between our two nations, with special events and deals just for us. Music festivals like Carolina Country Music Festival, holiday celebrations, and sporting events keep the fun going all year long.

8. Affordable Accommodations for Every Budget

Whether you’re looking for a luxury oceanfront resort, a cozy beach house, or a budget-friendly hotel, Myrtle Beach has no shortage of places to stay. What’s even better? The prices here are often much more reasonable than other vacation hotspots, meaning you can extend your stay without breaking the bank.

9. Dazzling Entertainment

There’s always great entertainment in Myrtle Beach! Catch a world-class show at The Carolina Opry or Alabama Theatre, or make it an adventure with dinner and a show at Pirates Voyage or Medieval Times. Many venues offer multiple performances daily, plus festive holiday shows in November and December.

For art lovers, the Myrtle Beach Art Museum showcases rotating exhibits from renowned artists worldwide. Whether it’s live music, theater, or visual arts, there’s never a dull moment at The Beach!

10. Warm Southern Hospitality

One of the things that keeps me coming back year after year is the people. The folks in Myrtle Beach welcome Canadians with open arms, and you’ll always find someone ready to chat about golf, hockey, or the best place to grab a drink after a long day on the course. Whether it’s the friendly faces at your resort, the staff at your favorite restaurant, or your playing partners at the golf course, you’ll feel right at home.

For many Canadians—myself included—Myrtle Beach isn’t just a vacation destination; it’s a second home. The sense of community, the familiar faces you see year after year, and the sheer joy of knowing you have a place to escape to make it special. It’s no surprise that so many of us return season after season, year after year.

I am originally from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I am a retired firefighter from the City of Montreal, and I have been in the golf business for 25 years. I was also a golf professional for almost ten years and golf continues to be my passion. I have been visiting Myrtle Beach for 30 years and I can say that I consider the city as my home away from home. This is my favorite destination when the golf season is over north of the border. I love everything about Myrtle Beach: the beautiful weather all year round, the superb golf courses, a multitude of restaurant choices, shopping for all tastes, 100 kilometers of beaches and all kinds of activities that will make your stay an unforgettable experience, whether it is with your golf partners, your family, or simply to settle down there for a few months to escape the cold of winter.
