Things to Do in October in Myrtle Beach

It's Fall, Y'all!

Cooler weather is on its way, and pumpkins, Halloween decorations, and evening walks on the beach are in full swing. Summer isn’t the only time of year when the beach is a good place to visit. During the fall you can enjoy the nice scenery in comfort and take part in the numerous festivals across the Grand Strand. There are also several spots to hit for the Halloween holiday, from family-friendly activities to things to do out on the town with friends.

Festivals

1. Little River Shrimp Fest

Little River ShrimpFest (Oct. 12 & 13): The 19th annual festival is back, ready to make you drool over dozens of varieties of shrimp. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, enjoy the historical waterfront festival in Little River with more than 100 vendors and activities such as live music, stilt walkers, craft vendors, community organizations, and more. Local restaurants will serve their best dishes and food favorites will be available to munch on throughout the day.

Loris Bog-Off Festival
2. Loris Bog Off

Loris Bog-off Festival (Oct. 19): A southern comfort food, that many know and love, has evolved over the years and become a central point that brings people together. The Loris Bog-off, operating since 1980, started as a chicken bog cooking competition and is now a festival with over 200 vendors. Spend your time judging the different recipes and enjoying dances, concerts, arts and crafts, and a firework show at the end of the day. The event happens every year on the third Saturday in October and will convince you to try the recipe on your own!

Art In The Park
3. Art In The Park

Art in the Park (Oct. 12 & 13): Since 1972, people have been crowding around to see various mediums of art from artists all around the country. Art in the Park is a show and sale, open to the public and artists. It runs for three weekends a year in Valor Park, Market Common. All art on display is original work or reproductions of original work from artists, including painting, woodwork, photography, pottery, and more. After the event, you can stroll around Market Common to enjoy one of the eateries or shop around the local boutiques.

4. I Love Seafood Fest

I Love Seafood Festival (Oct. 26): Back for its third year, the I Love Seafood Festival brings in catches from all over, including the Carolinas, Florida, Maryland, Jamacia, and more. Come out for a day of mouthwatering eats like crab, shrimp, lobster, seafood pots, oysters, fish - anything from the sea! The event will also have live music and cooking demonstrations from renowned chefs. Proceeds from the festival will go towards the 501c non-profit, Dayson Diamond Youth Foundation, which raises funds for children with incarcerated parents.

5. Boo Fest at Barefoot Landing

BooFest! (Oct 26): Is Barefoot Landing's annual Halloween celebration for the whole family. There are four costume contests which are as follows:

Kids 0 – 3 years old at noon

Kids 4 – 7 years old at 1 pm

Kids 8 – 12 years at 2 pm 

Pets at 3 pm

Registration starts at 11 am. Prizes are awarded for first, second and third place in all three categories. Guest emcees from Alabama Theatre will be there to entertain as well as entertainers from Over the Moon Productions. There will also be a guest emcee for the pets contest from The Humane Society of NMB. 

At 7 pm that evening, there will be a FREE showing of the original Hocus Pocus. All contests and the movie take place on the Dockside Village Stage (across from LuLu’s). Come on out for a day of friendly spooky fun!

Seasonal Shows and Performances

1. Myrtle Beach Jazz Festival

Myrtle Beach Jazz Festival (Oct. 18 – 20): Get ready for a weekend of smooth vibes, delicious food, and even greater music. Free for guests, the Myrtle Beach Jazz Fest welcomes guests with a full lineup of musicians. Located on the historical grounds of Charlie’s Place, a haven for African American artists to perform before the days of integration, the festival strives to be a spot for cultural exchange while celebrating music. Bring your chair or towel to lounge on while watching artists like Marcus Anderson, Nathan Mitchell, Jason Jackson, and others. While the event is free, donations are accepted.

2. Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art

Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art: For the first three weeks of October, enjoy numerous bands and artists at The Reserve Golf Club of Pawley’s Island. This festival spans numerous weekends offering different styles and harmonies, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Ticket prices vary depending on the show and seats.

1. Vintage Market Days

Vintage Market Days (Oct. 4 – 6): Welcome to ‘A Carolina Fall’. If you love antiquing or searching for upscale items, vintage market days will be heaven for you! Walk around the Myrtle Beach Sports Center which has been temporarily transformed into a market full of clothing, jewelry, home décor, furniture, plants, and even more. It’s a great place to find a treasure or discover unique items that have been locally sourced. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and tickets can be bought at the gate.  

2. Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon

Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon (Oct. 12): Add another completed race to your list when you sign up for the 13.1-mile ‘mini-marathon’ in Myrtle Beach! Kicking off at 7 a.m., the route is mapped throughout the downtown area of the city, parts of it running along the coastline allowing wonderful views of the ocean. A 5K is also offered at 7:30 a.m. if you’re looking for a lighter run. It’s a great time for locals and tourists to come together and celebrate their passion for running and the city for all it has to offer.   

3. Georgetown Wooden Boat Show

Georgetown Wooden Boat Show (Oct. 19 & 20): The Front Street in Historic Georgetown is hosting yet again the 35th annual Wooden Boat Show. One of the largest exhibits of its kind in the Southeast, the event will showcase at least 100 wooden boats, both in water and on land. Look in awe at the different designs and details that have been crafted into these boats and watch displays of boatbuilding, a youth sailing regatta, and knot tying, while enjoying various foods. All proceeds from the event will go towards the South Carolina Maritime Museum.

Fall-Themed Events

Barefoot Landing
1. Oktoberfest at Barefoot Landing

Oktoberfest at Barefoot Landing (Oct. 5): Pretzels, bratwurst, cheese, and beer… sounds like Oktoberfest has arrived! Spend your day at Barefoot Landing with tasty food, drinks, and good music. Starting at noon, German-themed food will be served at participating restaurants and shops. A $10 wristband can be purchased for a 10% discount on food and beverages (excluding alcohol) at most restaurants. Once you’ve had your fair share of fun, head to the Dockside Village Stage at 3 p.m. to see dogs dressed up for the ‘Every Dog’s A Weiner’ dog contest.

2. Brookgreen Gardens Harvest Home Weekend

Brookgreen Gardens Harvest Home Weekend (Oct. 5 & 6): Enjoy the cool weather with a nice outing to Brookgreen Gardens. Full of luscious color year-round, fall is a great time to visit with falling leaves and events. Participate in the Home Weekend Festival for fall fun including a pumpkin patch, hay maze, and food vendors. There will also be pumpkin decorating, $5 for small ones and $9 for large ones, and scarecrow making with individually prepared kits for $5. As an incentive, bring your own clothes to decorate your scarecrow and bring it home for free as a souvenir! Activities are while supplies last; the event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

3. Annual Fall Taste of Market Common

Annual Fall Taste of The Market Common (Oct. 12): Indulge in the diverse culinary experiences at Market Common through this annual event. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., you can try food from 16 restaurants, including newly opened ones such as Dirty Don’s Oyster Bar and Grill and CK’s Bistro. There will also be loads of entertainment for the family like face painting, balloon art, and activities from the children’s museum. Food-tasting tickets will be available for $1 each, with most tastings requiring 1 to 5 tickets. The tickets will be cash only.

4. Halloween Bar Crawl

Halloween Bar Crawl (Oct. 26): Grab your friends and your best costume for a night out at the beach! In its 7th edition, the Halloween Bar Crawl brings participants to several locations across the city. It’s a night dedicated to meeting new people and having a good time that can only be provided around Halloween. Various items and discounts will be included with tickets like custom keychain lanyards with bottle cap openers, drink specials, a Halloween badge, and access to the Myrtle Beach pub crawl map. The event will start check-in at 4 p.m. at Legends Sports Pub & Grille and conclude at midnight.

5. Halloween On The Marshwalk

Halloween on the MarshWalk (Oct. 31): Dress up and come out! Festivities will start at the Marshwalk at 5 p.m. with trick or treating for children of all ages. Then, an annual children’s costume contest will follow at 6 p.m., giving awards in the categories of Most Creative, Best Group, Most Funny, and Scariest. The adult costume contest will follow at 7 p.m. with alternative categories. Additionally, take part in a card stamping game at the seven restaurants along the inlet to be entered for grand prizes at the end of the night.

6. Trick or Treat at Broadway At The Beach

Trick or Treat at Broadway at the Beach (Oct. 31): From 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., put on your favorite costume and head to Broadway at the Beach. Participating establishments will hand out goodies to those dressed up!

She is originally from Montgomery, Alabama, but has resided in Myrtle Beach for 14 years.
