Besides the name itself, pickleball is known to be a fun, social and friendly game that’s exploding in popularity just about everywhere, including Myrtle Beach. It could be because of its appeal to the masses: the rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but it can also develop into a fast-paced, competitive game for others.

How did it all start? For those new to the craze, pickleball is actually rooted in many of the rules and regulations of the sport of badminton. In fact, in the summer of 1965, Washington state Congressman Joel Pritchard and friend Bill Bell returned to Pritchard’s home after a game of golf to find their families sitting around with nothing to do. So the two friends reinvented the sport of badminton from the court on property to become pickleball, said to be named after either it reminding Pritchard’s wife of the pickle boat in crew oarsmen who were chosen from different boatsman just like this new sports combo, or after the family dog named Pickles.

Either way, pickleball picked up in a big way across America since the ’60s, with USA Pickleball Membership reaching more than 50,000 members at the end of 2021 and nearly 8,500 locations on the USA Pickleball’s Places2Play map.

This rec center in the heart of Myrtle Beach has eight hard courts (four indoors and four outdoors). The lines are permanent, portable nets are available, and courts are free.

Midway Memorial Park

Located at: 19 Tea Rose St., Myrtle Beach

Located just down the road from the airport, Midway Park is a hub for outdoor courts, from basketball to tennis to pickleball. There are 10 dedicated outdoor hard courts here with permanent lines and nets. The courts are free, and players have access to lights for nighttime play.

South Strand Recreation Center

Located at: 9650 Scipio Lane, Myrtle Beach

Open until 8 p.m. the South Strand Rec Center is another great place to play pickleball, with four indoor wood courts for inclement weather year-round. Courts are free, lines are permanent, and portable nets are available

Surfside United Methodist Church

Located at: 800 13th Ave. North, Surfside Beach

There are two indoor courts at this church facility in Surfside Beach, which has permanent lines. A one-time fee is required, and you will need to bring your own net.

Crabtree Memorial Gym

Located at: 1004 Crabtree Lane, Myrtle Beach

Located in The Market Common, Crabtree has four free indoor courts available, with permanent lines. You will need to bring your own net.

Beach Church

Located at: 557 George Bishop Parkway, Myrtle Beach

This church facility hosts three indoor concrete courts with permanent lines and portable nets available. Courts are free, but first-come, first available without reservations.

Carolina Forest Recreation Center

Located at: 2254 Carolina Forest Blvd., Myrtle Beach

This rec center in Carolina Forest offers three indoor courts with permanent lines and portable nets available. A one-time fee is required to play.

Claire Chapin Epps Family YMCA

Located at: 5000 Claire Chapin Epps Drive, Myrtle Beach

The YMCA on the north end of Myrtle Beach boasts three indoor courts. Court lines are permanent, and portable nets are available. A membership is required to play.

J. Bryan Floyd Community Center

Located at: 1030 Possum Trot Road, North Myrtle Beach

Known as a great place to play pickleball in North Myrtle Beach, this community center has six indoor courts for organized session play between 8:30-11:30 a.m. and noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. There are 24 spots available to pre-book per session ($2 per day), with eight walk-in spots for playing levels from beginner to advanced. There are also four outdoor courts available behind the main building at the 1400 Outrigger Road address and Central Park Entrance. There is no charge for the outdoor courts, but you must bring your own equipment.

John T Rhodes Myrtle Beach Sports Center

Located at: 2115 Sports Center Way, Myrtle Beach

This massive indoor sports facility features 72,000 square feet of hardwood court space that can be converted between basketball, volleyball, table tennis, pickleball, and more. Additional amenities include a private mezzanine for elevated viewing, and a café with indoor/outdoor seating.

78 Fitness

Located at: 108 High Circle, Myrtle Beach

Located within Kingston Plantation, this upscale fitness center on the resort’s grounds features four dedicated outdoor asphalt pickleball courts with permanent lines and nets. Paddles and balls are available. Courts are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and require a one-time reservation fee to play.

Sands Resorts

Located at: 201 75th Ave. North, Myrtle Beach

A popular place to play pickleball, Sands offers two indoor courts with permanent lines. You will need to bring your own net. Courts can be reserved for a one-time fee.
