On Location: Loris, South Carolina

  By  Katie Hunter

As we travel from the top of the Grand Strand to the bottom and explore the 14 communities of the Myrtle Beach area, we are stopping today inland of Little River in a town called, Loris, South Carolina. Loris is an old railroad town that served the lumber industry beginning in the 1880s and is known for its abundance of southern charm.

While it may be one of the smallest communities by population size, Loris is a tightknit community with a revitalized downtown area and local farmer’s market.

The community always hosts the Annual Loris Bog-Off Festival each October. The chicken bog, which originated in Loris, is a dish consisting of rice, chicken, sausage, and spices – something you can only find in Loris. Throughout the years, variations of this recipe emerged, and the festival became the cooking contest for the best chicken bog. Visit our events calendar for date of the next Loris Bog-Off Festival.

For a true homecooked Loris meal, head over to Shorty’s Grill in downtown Loris. They serve up breakfast, lunch and dinner – or breakfast, “dinner” and “supper” as they like to call it. They offer their own take on traditional chicken bog along with fried chicken, mac and cheese, and more.

Another delicious restaurant in downtown Loris is called The Grind, a coffee and sandwich shop. Their motto is “local, fresh, homemade goodness” and that’s exactly what they serve!

The Diamondback Golf Course is a hidden gem in Loris with beautiful scenery and a laid-back atmosphere. The Diamondback boasts quality course architecture and quality conditions at an affordable price for just you or an entire group.

In Loris, you will always feel comfortable and at home so that you can relax and recharge while on your beach vacation. Next time you’re in the Myrtle Beach area, make the short drive to Loris to get a taste of real Americana!
