Hobcaw Barony, owned by The Belle W. Baruch Foundation is a sixteen-thousand-acre wildlife refuge research reserve and historic plantation that makes a great day trip for those looking to relax on the south end of the Grand Strand of the Myrtle Beach area. Discover a rich diversity of every common ecosystem found on the South Carolina coast - an unparalleled site for research in the environmental sciences. In addition, over 70 cultural sites on the plantation including cemeteries, slave cabins, and Baruch’s homes. See Hobcaw House, where Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, and other leaders of the 20th century stayed. Enjoy unique ecology programs through hikes at the beach, marsh, and forests.

Access and entry to the property is only by guided tour or programs, one of which (Discover Hobcaw Tour) is a fascinating 2-hour tour along 10 miles highlighting Hobcaw Barony's history and ecology. The bus stops and allows a tour of the 1930 home of Bernard Baruch. A native South Carolinian and Wall Street financier, he and other millionaires hunted ducks, deer and wild turkeys on this winter retreat. His home played host to politicians, generals and newspapermen as well as Winston Churchill and President Franklin Roosevelt. The tour includes a drive through Friendfield Village, the last 19th-century slave village on the Waccamaw Neck. You'll learn about coastal ecosystems, native wildlife, and endangered species as well. Limited by 14 seats, the Introductory Tours are most appropriate for people over 8 years old and the cost is $20 per person and reservations are required.

For those looking to experience more, a 3-hour tour (Explore Hobcaw Tour) makes stops North Inlet salt marsh, the grounds of Bellefield Plantation, Friendfield Village, and the main floor of Hobcaw House. Participants on the 3-hour tour have a chance to spend more time at each location than offered on the regular 2-hour tour. This tour includes some walking, standing for long periods and the cost is $30 per person and reservations are required.
