Myrtle Beach Area Symphony, Theatre & Chorale Roundup
If you’re looking to elevate your music and theatre experience, the Myrtle Beach area offers a lineup of symphonies, chorales, and small theatres to satisfy your cultural palate year-round.
Here is a handful of venues and groups we recommend looking into and booking a seat to see and hear them perform for yourself!
The Long Bay Symphony
Founded in 1987, The Long Bay Symphony has been a music mainstay on the Grand Strand. Comprised of the largest group of professional musicians, the orchestra, youth orchestra, and ensembles perform up to 30 concerts each season led by conductor Dr. Charles Jones Evans, who started at Long Bay in 1996. Concerts range from classical pops to Broadway series to more special events for all ages. Most Long Bay Symphony concerts take place at the Myrtle Beach High School Music & Arts Center.
GTS Theatre
The Myrtle Beach-based GTS Theatre is an intimate 1920s-style cabaret theatre, complete with an art deco backdrop. This family-run, award-winning theatre, owned by celebrity hypnotists Rich and Elizabeth Wylde, regularly features a Motown tribute show, “Elvis Live,” an Elton John tribute show, and comedy and specialty shows. No matter the show, expect live vocals, and audience and cast interaction.
Theatre of the Republic
A landmark located on the corner of Main Street and Fourth Avenue in historic downtown Conway, Theatre of the Republic is the Grand Strand’s longest-running live theatre company at more than 50 years. A full schedule of Broadway-caliber musicals hit the stage here, including special events for its Coastal Youth Theatre (CYT) program.
Carolina Master Chorale
The Carolina Master Chorale is the longest-running community vocal organization in the Myrtle Beach area and is known as the premier symphonic chorus in the region (northeast South Carolina and southeast North Carolina) for the past 39 years. The repertoire of these talented vocalists ranges from traditional to lesser-known choral/orchestral masterworks to full operatic productions to contemporary music to Broadway to vocal jazz and gospel music. The Chorale presents four programs each year at various churches on the Grand Strand.
Pawleys Island Concert Band
The all-volunteer Pawleys Island Concert Band community performs throughout Horry and Georgetown counties. Comprised of musicians from the amateur to professional level, the concert band was founded in 2004 with 13 local musicians; today, there are more than 67 musicians on the active roster. Their concert schedule typically includes a Spring Pops performance, a Holiday Seasonal concert, a Fourth of July celebration, and appearances at a variety of special events to support Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and the Friends of Atalaya at Huntington Beach State Park over the holidays.
Coastal Carolina University (CCU) Ensembles
Don’t forget the many year-round concerts on-campus performed by the Department of Music at CCU, which offers more than a dozen high-caliber performing ensembles in a variety of music across multiple genres. Ensembles include bands, choral and vocal, commercial music and jazz, percussion, and chamber.
