This is exciting news! For the first time in its history, the PGA Tour will stop in the Golf Capital of the World for the Myrtle Beach Classic from May 9th-12th. Activities will start May 6th at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club which will be hosting the event.

This legendary golf course is the only one known for its beauty along the Atlantic Ocean in Myrtle Beach. Designed by famous architect Robert Trent Jones, it will be a treat for the players and the fans. With its 75 years of rich history, The Dunes Golf and Beach Club is always preserving and enhancing the spectacular natural beauty of the land. The Dunes stands as a Top 100 Golf Course in virtually every major magazine ranking.  You can feel the breeze and enjoy the ocean side views from a few holes and especially from the clubhouse.  The 18 hole, 7425 yards par 72 (probably par 70 for the tournament) golf course has played host to numerous high-end golf tournaments including the PGA Senior Tour (now named The Champions Tour) and the USGA Women’s Open just to name a few.

The 4 million dollar purse tournament will host 120 players and features a one-of-a-kind qualifying tournament named The Q at Myrtle Beach with the winner receiving a sponsor exemption into the Tour event. Its 16 player, 18-hole shootout event that took place March 4th at the TPC Myrtle Beach golf club. The field is highlighted by eight of the game’s most prominent YouTube golf content creators and are all very good players with a USGA handicap of 0.0 or better. The Q at Myrtle Beach was closed to the public, but a 90-minute-long video will be released on Play Golf Myrtle Beach’s YouTube page on April 23rd and will reveal the winner.

The Myrtle Beach Classic is a dual-field PGA Tour event sponsored by Visit Myrtle Beach that will not only showcase the Grand Strand but also benefit the area with nine local social service charities that have been selected to receive a grant of $225,000.

Daily and weekly general admission tickets, and Club 18 Shared Hospitality options are available for purchases online at myrtlebeachclassic.com. Note that children 15 and younger are admitted free with an adult ticketholder.

If you are attending your first PGA Tour event, here are a few tips. Before you leave, check the weather, you may need a jacket or an umbrella, sunglasses, sunscreen lotion and check what bags are allowed. Dress for the occasion, you can’t miss with a golf attire and wear comfortable walking shoes. When you arrive at the site, grab a map and a tee sheet. Tee times usually start around 7 am so be prepared. Don’t forget to hydrate, you will walk a lot if you follow your favorite players for the entire round. Go to the practice areas. That’s where you can see for yourself the incredible talent these players possess. And of course, respect the rules and the Marshalls, stay quiet when players are about to play. Have fun, try to learn a few things, enjoy the competition and the beauty of the golf course, you will experience and see that these guys are really good!

Any time of the year is great time to visit The Beach, but May is exceptional. With temperatures that can easily reach 80 degrees Fahrenheit (over 28 Celsius for Canadians), the ocean water is getting warmer, and golf courses are in top shape and in full bloom. April and May are considered the high season for golf in Myrtle Beach. Why not combine a golf trip with your family or friends while watching some of the best players in the world compete at a very special golf course. Play and watch. I will do it; I have my golf package ready; 5 rounds of golf, a nice ocean front condominium and I will attend the 4 days of the tournament. Golf Tourism Solutions offers golf packages on over 90 championship golf courses and thousands of accommodations to choose from. You can visit playgolfmyrtlebeach.com and they will direct you and take care of all your needs.

But Myrtle Beach is not just a golf or a beach destination, far from it. Several recreational activities are available. Whether it's world class shopping, nautical activities, sea fishing, the amusement park with its 200 feet Sky Wheel, the mile long (2-kilometre) boardwalk, fifty-giant mini-putts, especially the new Tiger Woods PopStroke at Broadway at the Beach variety shows, historical museums, minor league baseball, or a multitude of festivals, you will easily find something to entertain you with family or friends.

I am originally from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I am a retired firefighter from the City of Montreal, and I have been in the golf business for 25 years. I was also a golf professional for almost ten years and golf continues to be my passion. I have been visiting Myrtle Beach for 30 years and I can say that I consider the city as my home away from home. This is my favorite destination when the golf season is over north of the border. I love everything about Myrtle Beach: the beautiful weather all year round, the superb golf courses, a multitude of restaurant choices, shopping for all tastes, 100 kilometers of beaches and all kinds of activities that will make your stay an unforgettable experience, whether it is with your golf partners, your family, or simply to settle down there for a few months to escape the cold of winter.
