The Myrtle Beach History, Movies & Music Trolley Tour will be held Tuesday, March 10th, from 2 - 4 PM. Guests will board a trolley for a two-hour narrated tour that will take them from The Market Common on a ride around Myrtle Beach; making stops at the Jack Thompson Gallery, where they will meet the beloved local icon who is both photographer and historian, and the South Carolina Hall of Fame. While aboard, they will hear about Myrtle Beach’s coming of age in the mid-twentieth century to present day, the movies that were made or premiered here, and the significance of music-- whether beach music or country-- in Myrtle Beach’s history.
Meet the trolley at 1:50 PM in front of the Grand 14 Cinema, at Deville and Reed Streets at The Market Common. The tour will depart at 2 PM and includes two stops at the Jack Thompson Gallery (historical books and photography will be available for purchase with cash or personal check) and the South Carolina Hall of Fame. Restrooms will be available at The Market Common just down Deville Street from Grand 14, beside Pedego Electric Bikes, and midway through the tour at the South Carolina Hall of Fame. Out of courtesy to your fellow passengers, please silence your cell phones and refrain from talking during the tour narration. Afterwards, the trolley will return to The Market Common where guests can enjoy the upscale dining, shopping and entertainment venues offered there on their own. The Market Common is conveniently located next to the airport, between the Highway 17 Bypass and Kings Highway, which is Highway 17 Business.
This is one of three Myrtle Beach history trolley tours designed to enhance the other two in order to create three unique experiences. Tickets to any or all three of these tours make popular birthday, anniversary, holiday or any-occasion gifts. Go to The Market Common website, www.MarketCommonMB.com/events, for details about The Early Myrtle Beach & The War Years Trolley Tour; and The Market Common Military History Trolley Tour & Reception. Tickets to each of these events is $30 and available for purchase at Eventbrite.com.
ADDITIONAL EXCURSION ON YOUR OWN: Either before or after taking this tour, guests are encouraged to visit The Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum. The school served African American students in the Myrtle Beach area for more than 20 years. Now, a new Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum and Education Center provides a window on that past, as well as a door to the future for all. Thanks to leadership from the City of Myrtle Beach, vision from former students and a partnership among public and private entities, the old school has been preserved in spirit and recreated in fact and continues to fulfill an educational mission.
It is located on the corner of Dunbar Street and Mr. Joe White Avenue (which is also 11th Avenue North coming from Kings Highway and 10th Avenue North coming from the Highway 17 Bypass). The address of the museum is 900 Dunbar Street, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577. The museum hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 10 AM to 12 PM. There is no admission, but all contributions are most appreciated when you sign in. Consider purchasing a copy of The Colored Wo-Men's Cookbook by The Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum and Education Center Committee. Former students contributed to the cookbook of traditional Southern recipes. Volunteers are on hand to show you around the museum, give you a brief oral history, and answer any questions. Previous tour-takers highly recommend going there.
