One of Our Finest Chefs Reveals Her Favorite Grand Strand Restaurants
Heidi Vukov is chef and owner of Hook & Barrel Restaurant, located at 8014 N Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach. Hook & Barrel opened in early 2017, the first “sustainable” restaurant in South Carolina. Heidi explains that wood from the trees that were cleared to make room for the building were cut and dried and used to decorate the interior of the restaurant. They also use unbreakable plateware, and their wine-by-the-glass is served from barrels, which not only eliminates bottle waste, it keeps wine fresh. The excellent menu is based on sustainable seafood, and the kitchen utilizes on-demand electric instead of gas.
We asked Heidi which Grand Strand restaurants she enjoys going to when she gets some time off from her busy schedule.
First, she mentioned the Cypress Room at the Island Vista Resort located at 6000 North Ocean Blvd. in Myrtle Beach. The Cypress Room offers amazing Low Country cuisine and since it is right on the beach, you can enjoy beautiful ocean views during breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Second, Heidi named the Sea Captain’s House, which is also located on the beach at 3002 North Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach. At this iconic restaurant that was once a beach house, you can enjoy amazing ocean views from any seat. The menu is primarily seafood, but they also have other choices, and they serve breakfast and lunch.
In addition to owning Hook & Barrel, Heidi also owns two Croissants Bistro & Bakery locations. One is at 8014 N Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach (attached to Hook & Barrel), and the other is located at 3751 Robert M Grissom Parkway, Myrtle Beach (not far from Broadway at the Beach). Croissants is open for breakfast and lunch, and they also provide catering, wedding cakes, and they roast their own coffee beans! They open at 7 am Monday - Saturday, and 9 am on Sunday.
Hook & Barrel is open at 4 pm every day for dinner, and happy hour takes place from 4 - 6 pm. Heidi and her well-trained staff invite you to come and “get hooked” at Hook & Barrel!
