You’ll find no shortage of waterfront dining options this summer in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The opening of restaurants like RipTydz and Tin Roof in downtown Myrtle Beach provide scenic views of the ocean, while at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach, LuLu’s is offering a fantastic view of the Intracoastal Waterway.

The 17,000-square foot, open-air restaurant opened in June and is seeing a steady wave of guests eager to sample their large menu, listen to live music, spend time on their private ‘beach,’ and enjoy the kids activities. The restaurant is owned and operated by Jimmy Buffett’s sister, Lucy, and features a menu inspired by ‘gumbo love’ and coastal cuisine hailing from Lucy’s hometown of Gulf Shores, Alabama.

We recently visited the restaurant for lunch, and cannot wait to return. The brightly painted restaurant--which seats 450 guests--is hard to miss. It’s painted in hot pinks and teals and is probably the largest restaurant in Barefoot Landing’s new Dockside Village dining district. We took our server’s recommendations when it came to ordering, and I’m so happy we did. The L.A. (Lower Alabama Caviar), Peel & Eat Shrimp, fried Blue Crab Claws, Lulu’s Famous Seafood Gumbo, and Blackened Fish Tacos were all amazing. And the red snapper plate even came with a neat ‘Fish Trax’ flag, where guests can scan a QR code and see exactly when, where and by whom their fish was caught!

Beyond the standard menu, Lulu’s also offers a very large ‘allergen friendly’ menu, with gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, shellfish-free, egg-free, and seafood-free options. They also have a special kitchen area specifically for preparation of these allergen free dishes. While I personally don’t have any diet restrictions, knowing that I can comfortably bring visiting friends with food allergies here is wonderful.

But as a mom of two small children, the main reason I will be back sooner rather than later is the kid friendliness of the entire establishment. Not only do they make children feel welcome here, their private ‘beach,’ ‘Fountain for Youth,’ and plethora of sand toys and games make it easy and enjoyable to bring your kids along. Future plans for LuLu’s involve a Shag Beach Bar, three-story ropes course and arcade, so it’s safe to say they understand the desire to keep every member of the family entertained and happy while on vacation.

LuLu’s also offers a small gift shop inside the restaurant, selling everything from t-shirts to the restaurant’s hot sauces to Lucy Buffett’s cookbooks. It’s a great spot to pick up an after-dinner souvenir. If you do plan on going, you may want to check out their website LuLuBuffett.com, as they provide a way to check the wait time for tables and sign up for a table before you arrive. Just click on the ‘go online to get in line’ badge on their website, and you’ll be on your way!
