Johnny Five, Rosie the Maid, C-3PO and R2-D2.

These are just a few of popular culture's most famous robots. And at one time or another, we've all envisioned building our own personal cyborg companion.

Alas, that box of knick-knacks in the garage wasn't going to cut it.

So, you'll excuse us for being in awe of all the high school students who will descend upon the Myrtle Beach area this weekend to do that for which we could only dream of - build a robot.

The 11th Annual Palmetto Regional FIRST Robotics Competition will be held at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center from Thursday, Feb. 27, through Saturday, March 1, 2014. It is free to the public.

This intense, three-day competition showcases robots developed and operated by 67 high school teams from 12 states, Canada and Brazil.

We were happy to take part in the 2013 event, and were left awestruck by the talent of these teams. All their hard work and skills are right there on display.

Plus, and we think this goes without saying, it's just really cool!

Make plans to come to the FIRST Robotics Competition this weekend at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Your inner child will thank you.
