News Flash: Sharks Live in the Ocean. And They’re Really Cool! Sharks are a source of both fascination and fear. They are an ancient species that has adapted and survived in our oceans for more than 450 million years, and although some species were once hunted to near extinction, many have made a comeback in recent decades. Worldwide, there are said to be more than 400 species of shark that range in size from a few inches to forty feet long. Off the coast of the Carolinas, there are usually 25 - 50 different species of sharks, depending upon…

Everyone loves dolphins. Playful, intelligent and beautiful, dolphins have long captured the attention of humans. Seeing dolphins in aquariums is cool, but nothing beats the thrill of coming across dolphins swimming and diving freely in the open water. Here are some fun facts about our dolphin friends: The Killer Whale (aka Orca) is actually a type of dolphin. Dolphins are carnivores (meat eaters). In history, dolphins were sometimes called mereswine--that is, "sea pig". Male dolphins are called bulls, females are called cows, and young…

So, the kids have spent two days on the beach. They’re having an amazing time, but by day three you’re thinking it would be a great idea to get them out of the mid-day sun. Or maybe it’s raining, and the kids are raring to go, but the beach is out! What are you going to do? I’ve got great news for you! The Myrtle Beach area has an amazing variety of daytime mid-day activities that you will love just as much as the kids will. Rain or shine, you’ll never be disappointed in the entertainment options along the Grand Strand. Attractions WonderWorks…

Can’t You Sea? is a powerful new exhibit at the Burroughs and Chapin Art Museum running through September 8, 2019. Can’t You Sea? brings awareness to one of our world’s most immediate and biggest environmental problems--plastic ocean pollution—through artwork made from plastic found in coastal areas around the world. Six artists/activists, Dianna Cohen, Alejandro Duran, Sayaka Ganz, Pam Longobardi, Aurora Robson , and Kirkland Smith , employ discarded plastic as both an artistic medium and as subject matter. One of my favorite pieces was composed…

When we heard Broadway Grand Prix opened their doors a little early this year, we were so excited! As the mom of two boys who love anything with wheels, it’s one of our favorite spots. Centrally located in Myrtle Beach just across from Broadway at the Beach , Broadway Grand Prix is the perfect spot to spend a sunny spring afternoon. This awesome racing attraction is home to seven Go-Kart tracks, a rock wall, an 18-hole mini golf course, the Sky Coaster, the Grand Prix arcade and a large snack bar. My four-year-old and I spent a LOT of time on…

There is so much I have always loved about living in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Now that I have two young children of my own, I’ve had the chance to rediscover the area through their eyes. Some of the things I loved as a child, like Brookgreen Gardens and the state parks, are places they love as well. But there is so much more to explore today! Here is a round-up of ten favorites: Huntington Beach State Park and Myrtle Beach State Park I’ll start with one of my favorites (or two, rather). Huntington Beach State Park and Myrtle Beach State…

Hopsewee Plantation -while just about 30 miles south of central Myrtle Beach-feels worlds away. This National Historic Landmark was built about 40 years before the American Revolutionary War, and is the birthplace of Thomas Lynch, Jr., one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. This private residence is open from January 30 through December 15 in 2018, Tuesday through Saturday, with tours on the hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This historically significant local landmark is by far one of my favorite places to take visiting friends and…

Rockin Jump is the Myrtle Beach area’s first indoor trampoline park and home to large open jump spaces, a challenge course, a vertical ops wall, dodgeball, a foam pit, rock wall and more. It’s great any time of year, but it’s an especially awesome attraction for times of year when it’s cooler and you don’t necessarily want to be outside. While I’ve visited Rockin’ Jump Trampoline Park in Myrtle Beach on several occasions, this past weekend was the first time I’ve actually taken my two kids. I’ve taken tours and gone with adults as part of a…

Here in Myrtle Beach, we enjoy a much milder winter than many experience further North. Even in January, we’ll see temperatures in the 60s on occasion! But as we head into January and February, it’s a good time to explore some of the great indoor activities the Myrtle Beach area has to offer. This quick list of favorites also doubles as good rainy day activities if you see a cloudy forecast while on vacation. Ripley’s Aquarium Probably one of the more well-known and popular indoors attractions in our area, there is a lot to love about Ripley’s…
