History Under A New Roof

We've been anxiously awaiting the reopening of the Horry County Museum in its new home at the former Burroughs School building. Well, the wait is over and all we can say is the new facility is fantastic! Stepping inside, one is immediately drawn to the beautiful winding staircase that leads up to the second floor. No, that wasn't a part of the Burroughs School ; it was custom built for the new location. Museum director Walter Hill said this spectacular staircase was added because they wanted an attractive, unique walkway. "We wanted to…

Halloween On The Marsh Walk

Monday, October 28, 2013 2:19 PM by VisitMyrtleBeach SC

It's almost All Hallows Eve! And that means ghosts and goblins of all ages will come out to get copious amounts of that Halloween staple - candy! We love the parade of youngsters who come out dressed to the nines every Oct. 31 in the Myrtle Beach area . What are they going to be this year? Perhaps one of the Avengers? A Despicable Me minion? One of the Duck Dynasty cast? More importantly, where are they going to go to have fun and get all those sweets that are sure to make hundreds of dentists cry? We can't think of a better place than…

The Haunting Season

Wednesday, October 23, 2013 4:54 PM by VisitMyrtleBeach SC

The spooky season is upon us here in the Myrtle Beach area . We're about a week away from Halloween, where we're sure to get our fill of costumes, candy and children of all ages. But for us, what we love more than anything about this time of year are ghost stories. Whether it's catching "The Exorcist" on television or spinning yarns over a campfire, we like tales that make us consider sleeping with the lights on. The beauty of the Grand Strand is we've got a few ghost stories of our own. One comes straight from Pawleys Island , and it's the…

All Aboard!

Who doesn't love boats? We certainly are fans. Whether it's spending a leisurely Saturday afternoon here in Myrtle Beach cruising along the Intracoastal Waterway, heading out on the open ocean to catch that big fish or relaxing on a luxurious cruise liner, we're certainly nuts for the nautical experience. And we're certainly excited for this Saturday's 24 th Annual Georgetown Wooden Boat Show , running from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Taking place on the waterfront and along Front Street in historic downtown Georgetown , this year's show will feature…

A Feeling Of Living in the 18th Century

Wednesday, October 2, 2013 4:08 PM by VisitMyrtleBeach SC

All one needs do is take a closer look at the Myrtle Beach area , and they'll find remnants of not only the Grand Strand's past, but the country's as well. Taking a trek to the outskirts of Georgetown, one will find an "historic jewel" in the Hopsewee Plantation . That's what the wonderful and vibrant tour guide called the home sitting on the property, because it's an original. That floor you walk on is the same floor that's been there for over 200 years. We found one of the more interesting aspects of the Hopsewee Plantation home is the…

We salute the men and women of the Armed Forces. Their dedication and commitment to preserving our freedom is appreciated not just here in the Myrtle Beach area , but all across the country. That's why we're offering one military family the chance to reconnect here along the Grand Strand. We're asking for entries for our Myrtle Beach 1 Million Military contest . If you know of a military family deserving of a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, you're encouraged to enter them for a chance to win a seven-day, six-night stay in an oceanfront beach…

A Trip Back In Time

Wednesday, September 18, 2013 4:44 PM by VisitMyrtleBeach SC

We are a bunch of history buffs, and love that the Grand Strand is rich with it. Driving up the road to Litchfield Plantation in Pawleys Island and seeing the avenue of gorgeous oak trees with their hanging moss, it's easy to feel as though you've just been transported back to the 18 th century. The house was built in the 1740s and overlooks 375 acres of historic rice fields. Today, the house serves as a bed and breakfast while also hosting numerous weddings. Inside, much of its 18 th century majesty remains intact, although with a few…
