Mr. Sandman, Build Me A Dream

Wednesday, March 5, 2014 9:51 AM by VisitMyrtleBeach SC

There's no shortage of sand in the Myrtle Beach area . With 60 miles of beautiful, uninterrupted beaches, that shouldn't come as a surprise. But we were once again pleasantly surprised with the fantastic work done by a crew from Florida, who turned 175 tons of sand into art. Team Sandtastic , out of Tampa, was again commissioned to build a sand sculpture to coincide with the 2014 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Conference Championships . In 2013, the sculpture was built using 150 tons of sand that were hauled in with six standard dump…

Begging for Barbecue!

The Myrtle Beach area certainly has its fair share of mouth-watering barbecue. We're happy to say there's another local joint that can be added to area list specializing in all things smoked, spicy and delicious. Big D's Bar-B-Que Barn is a quaint, cafeteria-themed restaurant that serves up delectable pork, scrumptious chicken and all those wonderful sides one expects to compliment barbecue. We're fans of spicy foods, so it was a real treat to discover the pork has just the perfect amount of heat to it. The wonderful crew at Big D's…

Johnny Five, Rosie the Maid, C-3PO and R2-D2. These are just a few of popular culture's most famous robots. And at one time or another, we've all envisioned building our own personal cyborg companion. Alas, that box of knick-knacks in the garage wasn't going to cut it. So, you'll excuse us for being in awe of all the high school students who will descend upon the Myrtle Beach area this weekend to do that for which we could only dream of - build a robot. The 11th Annual Palmetto Regional FIRST Robotics Competition will be held at the…

Are you suffering from a case of the winter doldrums? With the frigid temperatures we've experienced as of late here in the Myrtle Beach area , it would be understandable if you said yes. Fortunately, one of our favorite spots along the Grand Strand is offering a wonderful opportunity to be one with nature and learn a little history as well. The Oaks Plantation History and Nature Trail at Brookgreen Gardens uses interpretive panels to tell the plantation's history. There are also plenty of archaeological sites to check out, like the…

It's an early-20th century home that has all the amenities and accommodations to make your 21s century event one to remember. The Cooper House Event Center is located next to the Socastee Swing Bridge in the Myrtle Beach area . The trees in its garden are filled with that southern staple - hanging moss. Plus, the home's historic and rustic feel means your event will have its fair share of southern comfort. One of the great things about the Cooper House is the diversity of events they can host. Organizers plan, host and cater private parties…

The "polar vortex" hasn't spared the Myrtle Beach area its wintry embrace. Heaters all across the Grand Strand have been working overtime today as residents and visitors dug out those long-lost winter coats before braving the elements. Fortunately, forecasters are saying the weather should improve over the next few days and we'll be back to the more pleasant temperatures we're accustomed to during the winter months. So, what could be a better way to take your mind off the cold than by entering for a chance to win a seven-night stay in a…
