North Myrtle Beach
Where the Shag Reigns Supreme
The area now known as North Myrtle Beach has a rich history that began well before Europeans appeared. Originally the part-time home and retreat of the Waccamaw and Winyah Native American tribes, they called the coast, "Chicora", meaning "the land". The Spanish explored the area in the 1500s, and by the 1700s, what is now known as Cherry Grove was a successful indigo plantation, as well as the occasional home of the notorious pirate Blackbeard. Visitor’s today can set sail on Blackbeard’s Pirate Cruise, the elegant Barefoot Princess River Boat, or take for the high seas on the Big M Casino Boat.
Today, North Myrtle Beach is a thriving area and a favorite among tourists. In 1968, four existing communities, Cherry Grove, Windy Hill, Ocean Drive and Crescent Beach were combined to form the city. Throughout the year, festivals celebrate everything from St. Patrick's Day to the end of summer. The sound of beach music can be heard in the Ocean Drive section nearly every night as those who love the state dance, the shag, slip and slide the night away.
Premier golf courses await the enthusiast and for those who like to golf on a lighter side there are also plenty of miniature golf courses to enjoy. Enjoy a glass of wine at Duplin Winery, where you can tour their bottling room, and sample some of the best wines in the Carolinas.
An oceanfront amusement park on Main Street offers classic rides and amusements to please all ages, along with free summer concerts throughout the season in nearby McLean Park. Reptiles rule at a sanctuary that houses alligators, snakes, lizards and tropical birds. Beautiful beaches, fishing piers and boating, and the world's largest waterslide offer plenty of outdoor fun. Check out Inlet Point Plantation for horse rides on a private island, along the waterway, or on the beach.
Finding treasures and souvenirs are an exciting addition to any vacation. Well known for its wide variety of shopping, North Myrtle Beach has an array of outlet stores, malls, fun flea markets and unusual boutiques.
