Military Appreciation Days

May 1 - 31, 2017     Myrtle Beach, SC

Myrtle Beach celebrates Military Appreciation Days during the month of May with a full schedule of activities.  National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos is our 2017 Grand Marshal for the Military Appreciation Days parade on Saturday, May 27.  Come help us honor the men, women and families of our Armed Forces during the month of May.

Army National Guard Specialist Alek Skarlatos was awarded the United States Army Soldier's Medal and the French Legion of Honour for his heroic actions on a Paris-bound train in August 2015.  Alek and two childhood friends made international headlines when they overpowered a gunman who was threatening the passengers.

He subsequently was invited to compete on Season 21 of ABC TV's hit show, "Dancing with the Stars," finishing in third place with professional partner Lindsay Arnold.  Skarlatos recently completed a tour of duty in Afghanistan and continues to be a member of the Oregon National Guard.  As Grand Marshal, he will lead this year's parade, then greet fans afterwards at the Family Picnic in Valor Memorial Garden on Farrow Parkway.  Our news releaseannouncing Alek as Grand Marshal has more information about his selection.

The Military Appreciation Days Parade returns to the site of the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, now known as The Market Common.  The parade steps off at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 27, and travels Howard Avenue and Farrow Parkway.  We expect this year's parade to be one of the biggest and best ever!  Parade entry forms are available now, so sign up!

These month-long activities are sponsored by the City of Myrtle Beach, PGBA, LLC, and the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce as a "thank you" to our dedicated service men and women -- and their families.  The celebration includes active duty military personnel, reserves, the National Guard and veterans from all service branches.  During May, military personnel and their families also can look for discounts to area restaurants and attractions, so that they can enjoy the activities.

Our gratitude is evident during the big Family Picnic, Saturday, May 27, in Grand Park at The Market Common.  Pease join us for lunch prepared by the Omar Shriners Chefs.  The picnic is free for all, courtesy of PGBA, LLC.  Headlining Saturday afternoon is the Andrew Thielen Big Band with a live show.  Also featured are military exhibits, kids' activities and more

The Veterans March on Ocean Boulevard begins at 9:00 a.m., Monday, May 29.  This special Memorial Day event starts at 16th Avenue North and ends at the Pavilion site at Ninth Avenue North with a brief ceremony.  The march isn't a parade, so it won't feature floats or vehicles, unless a vehicle is required for veterans who are not able to walk.  This event is organized by the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association Chapter.

At 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 29, everyone is invited to join us for the Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony on the Plaza at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.  The annual event recognizes Memorial Day with speakers, the Missing Man Table and an honor guard salute.  The public is cordially invited to attend this and all other events, as we say "thank you" to our military men and women and their families.
