Following the passage of the Surface Transportation Reauthorization and Reform Act of 2015 by the U.S. Congress, Brad Dean, president and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, issued the following statement:

“We applaud Congressman Tom Rice and the other members of the U.S. Congress for passing this important piece of legislation. While it does not meet our nation’s growing transportation needs, it is a positive step forward in making the highway trust fund solvent and able to providing a modest level of transportation funding, including funds for the South Carolina Department of Transportation. Congressman Rice successfully led passage of an amendment directing the U.S. Department of Transportation to develop a national plan to improve our country’s travel infrastructure, marking the first time the highway reauthorization bill has specifically addressed the importance of the tourism industry.

Investments in transportation are vital to our local, state and national economies and we must find a way to address the lack of infrastructure funding at the state and federal level. While this act certainly does not solve our infrastructure problems, it is a necessary step in the right direction.”
