MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The holiday spirit is alive and well with the 7th Annual Substitutes for Santa community service event.

Sponsored by the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce's gsSCENE for Young Professionals, this event is giving 67 underprivileged Loris area children a shopping experience to brighten their holidays. It is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m.

To make the event a success, gsSCENE is seeking volunteers and donations.

"This event is an amazing experience for both the volunteers and the children," said Shannon Furtick, membership programs manager for the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and gsSCENE liaison. "The community can help make this holiday season brighter for the children through donations and volunteering their time. Let's give these children a Christmas that they will never forget."

Donations needed include: toilet paper; paper towels; toothbrushes; toothpaste; deodorant; detergent; soap; shampoo; conditioner; wash clothes; and lotions. All donations can be dropped off at the main MBACC office at 1200 N. Oak St., in Myrtle Beach.

Volunteers are also needed for the Dec. 10 shopping night. Those interested in assisting will be required to provide their full name and birthday for a mandatory background check.  Registration can be done by visiting The deadline is Nov. 29.

Each volunteer will be paired up with one child for the evening, which begins with dinner at Ultimate California Pizza Game Zone. It continues with a shopping spree at Walmart, where the volunteer will assist their child in picking toys and other items on their wish lists.
