MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The holiday spirit is alive and well with the 9th Annual Substitutes for Santa community service event.

Sponsored by the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce's gsSCENE for Young Professionals, this event is giving 100 underprivileged Loris area children a shopping experience to brighten their holidays. It is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2015, from 4 to 8 p.m.

To make the event a success, gsSCENE is seeking volunteers and donations.

"This event is an amazing experience for both the volunteers and the children," said Kema Faulk, membership programs manager for the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and gsSCENE liaison. "The community can help make this holiday season brighter for the children through donations and volunteering their time. Let's give these children a Christmas that they will never forget."

Donations needed include: toilet paper; paper towels; toothbrushes; toothpaste; deodorant; detergent; soap; shampoo; conditioner; wash clothes; and lotions. All donations can be dropped off at either the main MBACC office at 1200 N. Oak St., in Myrtle Beach, or all the Ultimate California Pizza and Divine Dining Group (Nacho Hippo, River City Café, Bubba's Fish Shack and Pawley's Raw Bar) locations throughout the Grand Strand.

Volunteers are also needed for the Dec. 8 shopping night. Those interested in assisting will be required to provide their full name and birthday for a mandatory background check. Registration can be done by visiting www.gsSCENE.com.

Each volunteer will be paired up with one child for the evening, which begins with dinner at Ultimate California Pizza Game Zone. It continues with a shopping spree at Walmart, where the volunteer will assist their child in picking toys and other items on their wish lists.

Ultimate California Pizza and Divine Dining Group (Nacho Hippo, River City Café, Bubba's Fish Shack and Pawley's Raw Bar) locations throughout the Grand Strand are now collecting $1 donations via their "share a slice" program, with all proceeds to benefit Substitutes for Santa. Once again this year, they will be offering paper slices of pizza, burgers, tacos, etc., to guests who make a contribution to the fund. Last year, UCP donated $4500 from the "share a slice" program proceeds.

All expenses for Substitute for Santa have been paid for through proceeds raised by gsSCENE's Kickin' It For Charity Kickball Tournament. Donations currently provided by: Ultimate California Pizza, A& I Fire & Water Restoration, Sunway Charters, Liberty Tax Service, Waccamaw Publishers and Native Sons and WMBF News.
