Vacation Tips

Tips to make your vacation safe and enjoyable

Vacation Information:

Information, discount coupons and special offers, a calendar of events, maps, and hundreds of brochures describing area attractions, shops, restaurants, and other businesses are available at the three offices of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. Call (843) 626-7444 for directions to the one nearest you.

Or, if you are arriving by air, make sure you stop by the chamber's visitor center at the Myrtle Beach International Airport. They too can assist you with an area map, event calendar and local brochures on places to eat or things to do.

Valuables:

Don't leave valuable items in your car, hotel room, or other visible/accessible places (such as on a beach towel while swimming).

Cash vs. Traveler's Checks:

Lost cash cannot be replaced, but traveler's checks can. Traveler's checks in U.S. currency are widely accepted in the Myrtle Beach area. These checks must be signed twice: first, at the bank in which they are purchased, and second, when they are used to make a purchase - in front of the merchant.

Foreign Currency:

Foreign currency or foreign traveler's checks can be exchanged at commercial banks in the Myrtle Beach area.

Automatic Teller Machines:

Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) are readily accessible throughout the area. Emergency cash may be obtained from many commercial banks with a major credit card, if the cardholder has cash advance privileges.

Important Documents:

Keep personal identification, medical information, and health insurance cards with you at all times in case of emergency.

Traffic Safety:

Local highways often are congested during rush hour traffic or inclement weather. Familiarize yourself with the area by using road maps and asking for directions. Allow extra time to reach your destination. Tune in to a local radio station for traffic updates. Consider alternate routes when traffic is heavy. Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, and be prepared for sudden stops.

Pedestrian Safety:

A few pointers for pedestrians: Always walk facing oncoming traffic. Wear light or reflective clothing, and carry a flashlight when walking atnight. Look left, then right, then left again before crossing the street.

Keeping Tabs on Your Family:

While vacationing, know where your children, parents, grandparents, spouses, and all significant others are at all times.

State and Local Laws:

Familiarize yourself with state and local laws and obey them.

911:

In case of emergency, call 911. Be prepared to provide your location. Remain calm.
